In a new study by Anthropic, researchers demonstrated how their large language model, Claude, can significantly speed up the process of programming robots to perform physical tasks.

The experiment, dubbed Project Fetch, pitted two groups against each other: one relying solely on human programmers, and the other utilizing Claude’s coding abilities alongside their expertise. Both teams were tasked with instructing a commercially available robot dog—the Unitree Go2—to complete various actions.

While neither group mastered every challenge, the team aided by Claude made notable strides. They successfully navigated the robot to locate and retrieve a beach ball, a feat the human-only team couldn’t achieve. This suggests that AI systems like Claude are evolving beyond mere text generation and are increasingly capable of bridging the gap between software commands and real-world robot actions.

Beyond task completion, Anthropic also analyzed the collaboration dynamics within each group. Intriguingly, the human teams without Claude’s assistance exhibited higher levels of frustration and confusion compared to their AI-assisted counterparts. This could be attributed to Claude streamlining the programming process by simplifying the interface and facilitating quicker connections with the robot.

Pappas advocates for developing safeguards like RoboGuard, a system designed to restrict an AI’s control over a robot’s behavior, preventing unintended or harmful actions. He underscores the critical point that true autonomy will arise when AI can learn from direct physical interaction with the environment, leading to potentially powerful—and risky—capabilities.
