Open-ear earbuds have gained popularity by offering a blend of audio immersion and situational awareness – a comfortable alternative to traditional, closed-fit designs. However, two major limitations have held them back: compromised sound quality in noisy environments and the inability to implement effective active noise cancellation (ANC). The Shokz OpenFit Pro ($250) attempts to change that, introducing the company’s first open-ear noise reduction system. While not on par with premium closed-ear ANC, it demonstrably reduces distracting mid-range frequencies, offering a more focused listening experience without complete isolation.
A New Approach to Noise Reduction
The OpenFit Pro’s noise reduction isn’t perfect. It won’t silence a busy street, but it can noticeably dampen the drone of a space heater or the hum of gym equipment, all while maintaining awareness of surrounding sounds. However, the system introduces an unusual side effect: some users experience an unpleasant inward pressure sensation, sometimes described as “sucking,” which intensifies at higher noise reduction levels. Reducing the intensity alleviates this discomfort but also diminishes the noise-canceling effect. Fortunately, music playback tends to mask this sensation.
Improved Sound Quality
Beyond noise reduction, the OpenFit Pro represents Shokz’s best-sounding open-ear earbuds to date. A larger, dual-diaphragm driver delivers improved bass response and detail compared to previous models like the OpenFit 2+ and OpenDots One, though open-ear designs still struggle to match the low-end punch of traditional earbuds. The OpenFit Pro also avoids the sibilance issues found in some earlier Shokz models, offering a clean and distortion-free listening experience.
The earbuds also support Dolby Atmos, enhancing the soundstage for a more immersive experience. This mode isn’t exclusive to Atmos content; it applies spatial audio processing to all audio, widening and deepening the sound. While effective, Bose’s Immersive Audio on the Ultra Open Earbuds remains superior in smoothness and realism.
Call Quality and Comfort
Shokz excels in call quality with the OpenFit Pro. The mics effectively eliminate background noise, ensuring clear communication even in chaotic environments. The open-ear design itself also enhances call clarity by allowing users to hear their own voice naturally, reducing fatigue during long conversations.
Comfort remains a key strength, with silicone-wrapped ear hooks providing a secure fit. The OpenFit Pro’s speaker pods contact the inner ear, improving stability but potentially causing discomfort over extended use. Despite this, most users find the fit comfortable, though those sensitive to pressure may prefer the less intrusive OpenFit/OpenFit 2/+ models.
Usability and Battery Life
Shokz has simplified controls with dedicated physical buttons, eliminating the unreliable hybrid touch/button system of past models. Wear sensors automatically pause music when the earbuds are removed, adding convenience. Battery life is impressive at 12 hours without noise reduction, dropping to 6 hours with it enabled. However, maximum noise reduction often requires higher volumes, further reducing battery performance.
One notable omission is Bluetooth Auracast support, a promising technology for audio sharing and broadcasts. The OpenFit Pro’s open design would be ideal for Auracast, but the feature is currently absent.
Ultimately, the Shokz OpenFit Pro pushes the boundaries of open-ear technology by integrating functional noise reduction, though it’s not without quirks. If you prioritize situational awareness and improved sound quality with a touch of noise filtering, these earbuds are a compelling option – provided the noise reduction doesn’t cause discomfort.
