Look at a school computer lab from the early 2000s. Machines linked on a local area network. Resources shared locally. That image captures a moment in time, but the broader economic picture has since fractured. We are living in what sociologist Daniel Bell called a postindustrial society in his 1973 book The Coming of Post-Industrial Society: A Venture in Social Forecasting. Bell didn’t just coin the term; he mapped the terrain. He predicted a world where the production of goods takes a backseat to the production of services.
This transition is most visible in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. These were the first to industrialize. Now, they are the first to de-industrialize.
How Postindustrial Societies Replace Blue-Collar Labor
The mechanics of this shift are brutal for workers and transformative for economies.
Few firms in developed nations manufacture physical goods directly anymore. If you want a chair, a phone, or a car, the assembly line is likely thousands of miles away. The local workforce has swapped blue-collar manual labor for technical and professional roles. Computer engineers, doctors, bankers. They don’t build the hardware. They manage the data, the capital, or the health of the people who do.
Practical knowledge loses its premium. Theoretical knowledge takes its place.
In a postindustrial society, the value lies not in the ability to fix the machine, but in understanding the system the machine serves.
This isn’t just an economic trade-off. It’s a cultural one. Society now pays closer attention to the ethical and theoretical implications of technology. We worry about environmental accidents. We fear massive power outages. New scientific disciplines emerge to handle these anxieties. Cybernetics. Artificial intelligence. Information technology. These fields don’t just build tools; they assess the risk of using them.
Universities and polytechnic institutes become the new engines of growth. They produce the graduates who create and guide these technologies. The factory floor is replaced by the lecture hall.
Where Does the Manufacturing Go?
If the goods aren’t made here, where are they made?
They are outsourced. Sent to industrial economies. This creates a tricky illusion. From the inside, a postindustrial society looks purely service-based. You see offices, not smokestacks. But the connection remains. The service economy is tethered to the industrial economies that fulfill its orders.
This outsourcing reshapes social norms. It changes how societies view foreigners and immigrants. When manufacturing leaves, the people who worked there lose their clearly defined social role. The community structure fractures.
Why Community Means Something Different Now
The word community used to mean geographical proximity. Your neighbors were your community. You shared a street, a school, a local factory.
That definition is dead.
Advances in telecommunications and the Internet have scattered communities. We associate with like-minded individuals, regardless of location. Telecommuting is the physical proof of this. People work from home, from co-working spaces, from cafes in other cities. They are farther from their place of work. They are farther from their coworkers.
Does this isolate us? Or does it connect us better?
The answer depends on your tolerance for digital interaction. The postindustrial model demands it. You trade physical presence for global connectivity. You trade the stability of a local factory job for the flexibility of a service role.
The trade-offs are clear. The manufacturing base is gone, but the service base is fragile. It relies on global supply chains that can break. It relies on theoretical knowledge that can become obsolete overnight.
We are still connected to the industrial economies we outsourced to. We just pretend we aren’t.
