Why Standard U.S. Health Plans Fail You Overseas and What to Buy Instead

10

Most Americans assume their health insurance covers them everywhere. That assumption is a financial trap waiting to happen. Medicare, for instance, covers almost nothing outside the United States. Even robust private plans often lack network providers abroad or refuse to pay for emergency evacuations, which can cost upwards of $100,000.

The U.S. Department of State is blunt about this: you need travel medical insurance if you leave the country. Relying on domestic coverage is risky. A broken leg in Bali or a sudden infection in Rome doesn’t just hurt; it can bankrupt you if you don’t have the right safety net.

How to Vet Your Existing Coverage

You might already have some protection without knowing it. Many premium credit cards offer trip cancellation, interruption, and even emergency medical benefits. But before you skip buying a standalone policy, you need to dig into the fine print.

Credit card benefits are rarely comprehensive. They often have low caps on medical expenses, excluding them entirely in many cases. They might cover lost luggage but leave you stranded in a foreign hospital. Compare the specific benefits of your card against the high cost of overseas healthcare. If the card’s medical limit is under $50,000, it’s likely insufficient for serious incidents.

What to Look For in a Standalone Policy

If your credit card falls short, or if you are taking an international prepaid trip, a dedicated travel medical insurance policy is the safer bet. Look for plans that explicitly mention coverage for:

  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Pre-existing conditions (if you qualify for a waiver)
  • Direct billing with international hospitals

Don’t just buy the cheapest option. Check the provider’s reputation and their ability to assist you remotely. A policy is only as good as the company’s capacity to pay the bills when you can’t.

The goal isn’t to predict disaster. It’s to ensure that a medical emergency abroad doesn’t become a financial crisis at home.
