Others remain stubbornly opaque. It all compels me. Call it love if you want. Call me a traitor to every other city I’ve ever lived in.

This isn’t an expert’s definitive guide. Locals know better. They distrust outsiders claiming ownership of the place. But after years of trial, error, and expensive mistakes, I’ve mapped a few reliable entry points. Places to stay, work, eat, and lose yourself.

The Beauty Trap

The city is prettier than you expect. You’ll see the freeways, the gray parking lots, the urban grit. But then you’ll pull over. Hillsides perfumed with citrus. Hundreds of miles of trails. Mountains framing the skyline to the east. Griffith Park offers a hint, but hike Moon Canyon for the real deal. I prefer Laurel Canyon. Drive Mulholland when it’s empty. Staggering beauty hits you regardless. Even in downtown. Look up. The art deco facades from the 20s and 30s don’t lie.

Where to Crash

First rule: Where are you actually going? Drive time is the enemy. Pick a base camp based on logistics.
